Good Morning Amazing People,
I have learned from a few writers that though writing may be your hobby, but if you are serious about it then it is work too. And so you should treat it as such, have a schedule and the will and need to show up to your chair, desk, computer every day.
I have created my writing schedule and I try to keep up with it, write my pages, and not skip out on my time craved out for writing. I do understand that, especially for writers who have day jobs and kids, keeping this schedule is sometimes very difficult. But don’t get discouraged and never beat yourself up over missing one day when you could not help it.
I am very easy on myself bout these things. Because I have a day job and friends and family who sometimes need me as well as other obligations, my writing just is not going to hold strong through all of those things. So I think to myself, which is most important to me now. I am not a best-selling author and the only deadlines I have are my own and can be changed if the need arises.
It sucks to say it and it does pain me, but writing is not and cannot be the most important thing in my life right now. Because if my writing comes before my day job then I’m getting fired and then no writing will ever occur. So, in a way, I am protecting my writing by leaving it when I have another obligation.
I see it as calling in another coworker to cover your shift because you had an emergency or because you don’t want to work that day. The only issue with this is, there is no one to cover your writing shift but you. So to make up for this misstep on my part, I do extra writing the next time I have the chance so I can get back in my book’s good graces. Like you would take a shift for the coworkers who helped you out as a way of thanking them.
