Dark Romance | The Bad Boy | The Villain | The Partner In Crime
Good morning beauties,
I thought today I’d delve a bit into dark romance since it’s been my most current and gripping obsession lately. I personally love the idea of the bad boy that only treats the protagonist right. I love the villain who will burn the world down, tearing everyone apart to protect the only person he’s ever loved (the protagonist). I absolutely love these guys, but I also melt for the accomplice, the partner in crime, the confidante. Who’s always there and always partaking in the dangers so they can protect the protagonist. This usually turns into a romance subplot, but I’m so there for it.
These guys have so much going for them. They will do anything for their love interest, no matter the cost to the, and that is a beautiful thing. I think everyone wants that kind of strong, consuming, urgent sort of love. And to know that someone thinks of only you, that they can’t help it. They can’t help but hurt when you’re hurting. That they want to be there for you, wiping your tears away until they stop before lashing out at those who caused the tears.
So, what do these people have in common?
Bad Boy/Bad Girl:
first love - they’ve never been in love before, but they fall for the love interest, head over heels and let’s face it, it’s romantic as hell to realize you’re someone’s first love.
reluctant love trope: they try not to fall for the love interest, but they’ll never win the fight. They fall even as they fight against their feelings, it’s going to happen anyway.
they’ll never give it up: they will fight and battle to the end of the world to keep this new feeling they’ve acquired. They won’t be letting anyone take it from them.
no one will dare hurt the love interest: if they do, they stand to lose more than their pride, a lot more.
they’re willing to change: they change their ways, whether that be the bully, the player, the criminal/delinquent because it could hurt the love interest and they’d never let that happen. So they make the choice to change (or try to change) so they don’t lose what has become the most precious thing in the world to them.
sweet/gentleness: they’re sweet and gentle with the love interest and they often will even consent to taking the relationship slowly as they fear any faster and they’ll lose the love interest. This extends to even monogamy when in the past they were anything but monogamous.
The Villan:
only love: either they’ve never loved anyone before, or everyone they love is gone and the love interest is the only one left. This hits me in all the good places. It’s them against the world, them against everyone else.
burn the world: the villain is a great love interest as they will do anything in their power, no crime is off the table here, to keep their love interest safe. They will kill anyone who touches them, hurts them, or even insults them. This is a powerful, obsessive kind of love, but in book form, it feels safe and sweet and romantic. Like no one will ever hurt you again unless they want to die over it.
dark and dangerous: the villain always feels darker, more sinister and dangerous, but beneath that there are sweet parts. They are romantic, they are safe, they will protect, they will hold you while you cry and kill anyone who contributed to those tears. But the mysterious air of danger surrounding them is what’s so attractive, they seem like they’ll hurt you and they might put you through pain, but they’d never hurt you. In fact, they’ll protect you at the cost of anyone’s life, including their own.
anything you desire: anything you’ll ever need or desire will be given to you. They won’t even blink at the cost, millions, or a life, it matters little to them.
enemies: they’ll help you fight your enemies if you need them. But if you don’t, they’ll be there with you every step of the way as you fight your own battles, watching you become who you are and loving every inch, knowing you belong with them.
Accomplice/partner in crime:
always there: whether it begins as love or friendship, this person would never let you go into a dangerous situation alone, they’d follow you to the end of the world and jump off with you if it’s what you wanted or needed. They’ll never leave, no matter what happens. They’re a constant.
dangerous love trope: this person is dangerous to love. This is because both the love interest and the partner in crime will tear the world apart for each other. They will defend each other, at the cost of anyone’s death. This is like the protection trope with the bad boy and villain, only it’s both of them doing it.
you’ll never be alone: even as an outcast or a hunted criminal, they’ll never leave your side. They’ll be next to you fighting until their last breath.
banter: there is usually a good deal of banter between the two as they are so close and it’s very endearing and cute. It shows how comfortable they are together.
So that’s all I have for you. These are my favourite bonuses of picking each of these types of characters in dark romance. I would choose any one of them and be happy with my decision.
Well, thanks for joining me. I hope this showed you a darker, more romantic side to these character types. Or maybe you’ve never read a dark romance, but this is having you reconsidering. Great! I have recommendations.
Happy reading and writing! Lots of love! Until next time.
