Powerful Writing | How To Write Powerfully
Good morning, all you lovely people,
I have been MIA for far too long, but I’ve been working on a new novel which has since been completed and so I thought I’d get back to it a little. I’ve been so busy because there are so many things I want to do, but I don’t have time for most of them. I have time for one or another at any given time during my day, that is, if I have any time at all. My job is very demanding so I don’t always have time for anything or if I have time, then I don’t have the energy. But I am showing up today and I call that a win.
Emotion. One word, that’s it. If the book is terrible or has terrible editing, emotion could potentially save it. I have read through books, trudged through them because I felt so connected to the characters or one particular character. I wanted to see what happened to them in the book, so I kept going. Emotion is the most important thing. If you cannot create a connection between your reader and even one of your characters, then you need to change something.
Power and impact come from strong emotions. Like I said, I kept reading an awful book because I loved the characters. I felt connected to them. I enjoyed the characters so much that I didn’t mind reading about a faulty storyline because I got to spend time with the characters I enjoyed.
Now, that being said, emotion isn’t the only thing you should have in your story. Or a connection to the characters. But it is certainly a really good starting point. Because people aren’t willing to continue reading a story about a character they dislike or cannot connect with. They will put your book down and maybe never pick up another one.
So, the very first thing you should do to do justice to the story you’re trying to tell, is to establish a connection to the characters within this story. If you don’t feel connected to them, then you won’t be writing them in a way that will help the reader feel connected to them. You have to understand them, their struggles and their hardships and what they long for, what they dream of and how they hurt and what they feel.
I hope this helped some of yu get started! I may not know much, but as a reader myself, I know a little. I know what I like and I know what I feel is important and I find most people get excited about a book when they connect with a character or all of them in some way.
That’s all for today. Happy reading and writing! I hope to see you all again very very soon.
