How Do you Write A Book? Step 3: Brainstorm

Good morning lovelies,

Yes, I’m back with more how-to in my how to write a book series. The only reason I made this series is because there are so many series, so many people covering the topics of how to write a book properly. I want to try and show beginners that there isn’t some specific exact routine or way of writing a book that you must stick to no matter what. Because let’s face it, there isn’t.

How you write a book all depends on the type of writer you are and what works best for you. Not all writers write books the same or even write the same type of books (and no I’m not talking about genre). There are endless types of novels and stories because no writer will write the same book as any other writer. They’re all different in some manner.

So next is brainstorming! I usually take a few steps when I begin exploring an idea I’ve come up with. I do these things:

  • jot down the original idea - whether this be a word, a sentence or paragraph of ideas

  • below that I jot down any other ideas - all other ideas that relate to the story in some way but that don’t have any actual standing yet and I’m not sure where they belong, only that they belong. I do this because I’m afraid I will lose these ideas and I will be very upset if they end up being a bit plot point and I forget the idea

  • I explore and expand on my original idea(s) - I spend some time thinking about the first idea(s) I wrote at the top of the page and expand on them as more ideas flood my brain when thinking about the topic I’ve chosen for my story

  • I expand on any other ideas I’ve jotted down and keep jotting down and new ones that come to me - I make sure to give myself enough time to fully explore these ideas and empty my brain of them while I have the time. I do this until no more ideas come to me after several minutes of sitting with my splash of ideas. This is usually where names or character descriptions also come out if I know them by this point

  • Then, if I’m feeling ambitious enough, I’ll start either planning (if the story calls for it) or start discovery writing it

These are just a few things to consider, if these do not work for you, then no problem. But these tips are to give beginners an idea of how the beginning of a writing process can look.

Anyway, that’s how I do my brainstorming. Thanks for popping in. I hope this helps you in the beginning of your writing journey. If it doesn’t, then I hope you at least find comfort in knowing that my process is different from any other process I’ve seen on the internet so far. So if yours is different, do not be alarmed. The writing process is as different as every writer is.

Thanks for stopping by, I hope you have a great rest of your day. Lots of love! Happy reading and writing, editing and beginning. Until next time.
