What Do I Do With A New Idea?

Good morning everyone,

It’s so great to be back here. I know my last post took a tad longer than it should have, but I’ve been focusing on school. There is a lot of reading this year and I don’t want to fall behind. Or at least I don’t want o fall behind this early on. But I think this post will come out sooner than you’ll expect so, I’m making it right.

Now, many new writers or beginners tend to ask (I know I asked this several years ago) what to do with all of your new ideas. Now, as someone who has a huge new idea about once every few months, but no time to write them all, this is the method that I stick to.

  1. First, write it down. Whatever idea you have as much of it as you have in your mind so you don’t forget it. Because what if it makes you famous one day or someone wants to make a movie or TV series out of it because it’s just that good. You don’t want to lose it.

  2. Put it aside. Then once I’ve written down all I know of the idea, I put it aside because now my brain is satisfied that the idea is safe and I can always come back to it.

  3. Come back to it with new ideas. After a short while, the idea will pop into my head again or something will prompt me to think about the idea, or I do something, say something, go somewhere that sparks more of an idea so I find that file/paper and continue writing what I know of the idea. Then I put it away again.

  4. Return to it with more of a plan. Some time later, whether I’m working on other projects or not, the idea will pop back into my head only this time, my brain wants to explore the idea further. That’s when I do a brainstorm or info-dump and regurgitate every idea I can think of that may come in handy or may be used in this project at all. This is also when I begin thinking of titles of the books (if I haven’t already), and characters and names, or plots.

  5. Set it aside until it becomes a more major project. My mind will let me know when I need to begin planning out a book or working on it further and begin drafting. It’ll happen when I can no longer hold back. I get this urge like I have to write it or I have to plan it.

  6. Put it aside until it’s time to write. If I planned in the previous step, then I begin writing here. But if I started writing without a plan in the last step, then I’ll just continue writing.

Anyway, this is how my ideas form and how I go about documenting them so I don’t forget a thing. Some ideas are more prominent and immediate than others. Some keep coming back into my mind no matter what I do while others stay dormant, waiting until I have time to work on them.

Anyway, that’s it! I hope you liked it and I hope it helps you get all those swimming (swarming) ideas out of your head in the most organized way possible. Happy reading and writing! Until next time, guys.
