Writing Prompt: Betrayal

Good Morning amazing People,

Your main character is betrayed by someone close to them, someone who would never betray them. You don’t have to use this in your story, but it is a good thing to think about in case you decide to expand things in a different direction.

I actually did something similar to this for my book series just to explore how things would go if the main character were betrayed by her best friend because her friend was trying to protect her. This is a longer one than last time, but I think it’s pretty good. This is the one I used when I did this prompt the first time.

“We can’t tell her. She’ll freak if she finds out about this.”

“Yes, but she deserves to know the truth. You are her best friend and you are supposed to be on her side no matter what. No, you’re siding against her and not just that, but you are ruining her relationship.”

“That may be true, but you know as well as I do that they are becoming toxic. He is morphing into something bad and she doesn’t need that trouble in her life right now or ever. If I don’t do something to stop this then he will hurt her, I just know it.”

“What are you talking about?”

“I mean he is changing. He is spending too much time with her and she is too human for his monster side. She is too innocent. He thirsts for her blood even now, and with each minute he spends with her his hunger grows and the monster gets closer to escaping, unleashing itself on her and the rest of the world. I must keep that from her and I must keep her from him too. This is for her own safety. I must do this to save her life. Do you understand that?”

“Okay fine, but I’m helping you. You can’t possibly think this will work if you don’t have help.”

I throw my hands into the air all dramatic-like and sigh, “whatever, now hurry, we have to get there before he does.”

“Here, hop on my back, I can run faster than you.”

“Oh really?”

“Oh, will you just give up for once and let me help? If you don’t hop up right now, then you’ll never make it in time and this whole plan and the pain you caused her will be for nothing. Is that what you want? To have caused her unnecessary pain?”

I shake my head, the reality of the situation finally dawning on me fully. “Okay, you’re right.”

I hop onto his back and wrap my arms around his neck, securing myself to his body. “Hold on tight because falling off will hurt a lot more than you think it will. We have a long way to go and we will be there in minutes. I can’t have you falling off and getting hurt, that will help no one.”

“I have a very good grip now get going. As you said, we are wasting precious time.”

The wind whips my hair from my face, pulling on my scalp as though hanging on for dear life. Then within minutes, everything grows still, and my feet meet solid ground once more.

“Now,” he glances at his watch, “we only have about three minutes until he gets here so you need to write a note to him saying that she is leaving because she can’t handle his secret and the weirdness that has grown apparent between them since the trial.”

I nod, heading into the building and quickly scrounging up a pen and paper. I scrawl on it hurriedly to make the illusion of panic and emotions mixing and swirling together apparent. I splash a few drops of water on the page, assuming that she would be crying over leaving him, but knowing it is necessary at the same time.

I place the note on the table then blow it onto the floor as though it would have fallen there when she quickly slammed the door shut behind her.

I exit and saunter slowly down the front steps hating myself for what I am doing, but knowing that I have no choice. She is my whole life or at least she used to be my whole life, and I can’t let this happen to her. He can’t control the beast within him and I will not stand and watch as this man unleashes a monster to feast on my best friend.

Sometimes I have to make the hardest choices to protect the people close to me and this is one of those moments. I close my eyes and take a deep breath, I stand next to Marcus staring up at the manor, my heart in my throat.

“Okay, it’s done, we should go.”

“Yeah, you okay?”

“As okay as I can be. At least my best friend will keep her life, even if she hates me forever. That is one choice I will be able to live with, but I would not have been able to live with myself if I had this feeling and stood here hoping for the best and watching her die instead of doing something about it.”

“I know, hop on and we will go home.”

He holds the door open for me and I rub my eyes and stumble inside. Once the door is locked behind us, he swings me into his arms, strong and firm, holding me against him, comfort washing over me along with his warmth. A comfort I do not deserve after deceiving my best friend.

I hope you guys enjoyed that, I took a character from my current WIP (Work In Progress) and created a new scene where she betrays another character, a friend of theirs, but only to protect her. It was liberating and it felt good to go off the set script for my novel series.
