Good morning all you lovely people,
As writers, we know that a routine for our writing tends to work best as your mind gets used to flowing well during that time you set aside. And we work much better when we have a slot of time set aside for our writing and we don’t have to rush through our creative time because we find we didn’t have enough time for it.
Today I’m going to talk about what I do when I write and when I write, how I write all that good stuff. As we all know routines help control creativity and give it a designated time slot to be released onto the page and this also keeps the creative well from drying completely. It helps us discern how much time is needed for the well to fill again.
Alright, well, my routine has changed over the years based on when I have free time. In high school I was mostly writing in the evening or at night when everyone else in my family had gone to sleep or at least to their rooms. I would sit up late on the couch and do my writing. The low-lit environment and the quiet that came with it helped me remain focussed on my task and my story and it also made me feel inspired as it felt like I was the only person still awake in the entire world. (obviously not true, but that’s what it felt like.)
However, in recent years it is very different, the opposite really, but this routine works better for me now considering all factors, my job, my partner and all the other aspects of my life. Currently, I get up at 9 every morning and that’s when I do my writing. I sit in front of my living room window, letting the light shine in while my partner is still asleep in the bedroom as he’s more of a night owl. This works perfectly for me because it gives me the alone time that I crave when I’m in the groove of writing or managing my author platform. It gives me more space to think on my own with no one distracting me.
And this works well because of my work schedule as I work evenings mostly. Though, I do work some day shifts a week. So I usually (when I’m not burnout) try to write at least a bit in the morning 3-4 days a week usually around an hour, but it often turns into more than that as the words begins to flow and I cannot stop them.
I do have a desk, but lately I’ve been having an aversion to it lol. So instead I sit on the floor using my couch as a backrest with a pillow under me and write at my coffee table. I always have a cup of coffee with me as I feel it helps the words flow better and make more sense in my mind. It keeps them from getting jumbled because I cannot use words without coffee. If I end up writing in the afternoon then I make myself an iced coffee to drink while I work.
This is what’s been working for me lately, even through burnout and I think it’s going to stick around for a while. Though I would like to get back into night/evening writing. I really enjoyed it.
Anyway, thanks for tuning in guys! I missed you. Please comment below, I’d love to hear from you. What does your writing routine look like? Or where do you do most of your writing or when? Lots of love! Have a great rest of your day! Until next time, bye.
